About Eric

Eric turned 28 and continued to split his life between SF and MSF
(it's a great organization -- please donate to MSF if you are able!)

His second MSF deployment was to NYC during the COVID crisis last Spring.
This was their first project in the US, and it was very different from South Sudan: they helped
the homeless get basic health, sanitation and communication services during the lock down.

Other than a September visit with Marta in Switzerland, the rest of the year was spent
sequestered in his group home in SF or working on the newest Pyka autonomous crop duster.

Plus lots of biking, kite-surfing, unicycling and a new electric motorcycle.

With the Pyka crew and their newest electric fixed-wing crop duster in Oakland:

The plane weighs about 600 lbs but
can carry 800 lbs of spray!

With the MSF crew in New York City

Eric was in New York for 3 months, providing
logistical support for COVID relief efforts

While in NYC he got some breaks (and a new bike) and toured Manhattan and the Hudson River Valley
At Pyka he spent time designing boxes, fit a plane into a shipping container, and tackled logistical challenges
Although he was able to work at Pyka's warehouse HQ most of the time, he also converted his
tiny room in SF into a well-ventilated office.

Although the plane is his main vehicle project,
he also spent plenty of time with his bus

And he and Marta got to use a really cool
mini version of the bus in Switzerland

Unfortunately one new motorized vehicle in
his life (the new motorcycle) helped him to
break his wrist and get rather scraped up

He is now the second in the Schmidt family
to have hardware in a joint! (Lisa has more.)

But the crash has not reduced his love for all kinds of motorized vehicles

Eric got to visit Marta in Switzerland for 3 weeks
and they had a most excellent time

They found weird things in the Alps

Visited a huge glacier

And jumped off a cliff

Everywhere Eric happened to be he of course found time to bike,
frequently with friends (9 of which he has quarantined with in the Swamp)

Eric's 5 acres in Walker, CA provided a great place to quarantine: Lisa and Steve visited him there in July

Unfortunately, a fire went right through his neighborhood this fall. Eric's land was already bare but many homes nearby were destroyed.

There are plans in the work for a home on his
property and it includes a 1,200 lb bearing
(of course), which was delivered this fall

He spent more time in the mountains when he
joined everyone at Muir Trail Ranch for a
weekend and tapped into his inner cowboy

And he got to spend time with both sisters (one had to be distanced, but luckily dogs are safe to be around).

Among the four of us Eric has been hardest hit by the pandemic -- he misses
the normal socializing of a young adult in San Francisco.
So we all hope this returns to normal as quickly as possible.
